Aimed at the needs of young people, My Dutch Uncle contains simplified applications of the ways to understand the issues in life as they are described the author's other work in the area, Personal Choice and Realities of Life.

My Dutch Uncle is the answer to the question, "Has anyone every sat down with you and discussed the phases of life, the issues you might face, and the consequences of the decisions you will need to make in the future?

Prior to My Dutch Uncle, there has been no -- none -- source that addresses this central question for young people who are emerging from adolescence, in college, or choosing trades and ways to make a living. No other source relates all of these issues to family formation, what happens when a person encounters illness and adversity, faces taking care of parents, and ultimately providing for his or her old age.

Far from conventional how-to or do-this mass market pap, My Dutch Uncle describes the seasons of life, progressions of key issues human beings in the United States face, the field of opportunity in the US, the difficult effects of competition and random chance, and the personal choices that young people can expect to face as they enter the world of adulthood and work.

In the process of dealing with this question, My Dutch Uncle uses scenarios involving different personal circumstances (e.g. for those who are poor and have little access to opportunity, middle class men and women, and those from wealthy backgrounds) to show what happens when life unfolds in different ways. The scenarios highlight key personal choices that a person can be expected to face over time, and the resulting economic consequences from how one views alternatives and makes choices.

My Dutch Uncle contains a special section devoted to discussions of the special problems of women in the US, including those of women who come from disadvantaged circumstances, women who become single parents, and professional women.
